TRADITIONAL ANGLICAN COMMUNION: A "kindly Light" *

July 30th 2008 04:21
By Steven Barrett

First it was a trickle before the much ballyhooed Lambeth gathering of Anglican primates this year in London and Canterbury, now it appears as if there'll be more disaffected and disgusted Anglicans ready to "cross the Tiber" to the Vatican. Not quite a flood, but slow and surely, the numbers are bound to rise.

No doubt the Catholic Church will get the vast majority of disgusted Episcopalians and Anglicans across the globe, but so will many of the more self-described "Bible Church" evangelical denominations and independent megachurches, etc.

Where else do they have to turn to? The m ostly liberal" mainline Protestant denominations have largely embraced postmodernism and moral relativism as their "compass." The more Catholic believing Anglicans are less likely to join with the "low church" brethern and embrace (similarly conservative thinking) albeit liturgically and organizationally different evangelical churches.

One such Anglican branch has decided not to bother waiting because for all intents and purposes, it is as much "in communion" with Rome as the Taize Movement and its founder, the late-Brother Roger, a French Protestant monk who was accorded by then-Cardinal Ratzinger, the distinct honor of being the only Protestant to receive Communion at Pope John Paul the Great's Requiem. (WIthin weeks, Br. Roger was murdered during a service by a deranged woman. He was succeed by a Catholic monk.)

As I was saying about an Anglican branch, being "for all intents and purposes ... in communion" with Rome. I'm referring to the Traditional Anglican Communion, presently led by Archbishop John Hepworth, an Austrailian. In a letter sent to (American) Cardinal William Levada, the Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF) -- Archbishop Hepworth practically banged on the doors of the Vatican itself. Levada gave a positive response, which you can access from this link.

If any readers are interested in this branch and want to know where they can find a nearby parish, go to: http://www.acahome.org/

Admittedly, I've done more than my fair share of beating up on the crumbling, albeit "establishment" Episcopal Church and Ch. of England, but I hold many fond memories of the good things I was able to take from Anglicanism during the time my wife belonged to an Episcopal parish in Amherst. Sadly, it's gone too far to port whilst we wondered why.
